I pull up to Bret’s house and honk twice to let him know I’m here. I offered to drive since we’d be in my neck of the woods. It also makes me feel like I have the upper hand somehow. His Jeep doesn’t allow me to think clearly and it’s a warm October morning; my hair could not survive two hours with the top off.

“Ready, Dr. Dre?” Bret opens the back door, throws in his carry-on and hangs up his suit bag. Bret did make sure to tell me that the wedding was going to be dressy. It’s an evening wedding at a swanky downtown hotel. The couple is older, well our age, so they’ve got the money to throw a pretty classy affair.

I purchased my first little black dress for the occasion. Well, it’s more of a large black dress, but it’s still a first!

“How do you like the new ride?” he asks as he settles in the passenger seat.

“I love it,” I say with a smirk, wondering what automobile category I’m in now for him. Backing out of the driveway, I ask, “So, ever been to Cleveland?”

“Can’t say I have.” He laughs and removes his phone from his pocket touching the screen. “Sorry,” he apologizes for the distraction, “My buddy, Mack, just landed in Cleveland. We are goin’ to meet up for lunch, if you’d like to join us?”

“Thank you, but I’m going to go hang out with my sister for the afternoon. The wedding starts at five, right?” I think of the timeline; this means I will have to start getting ready at like two-thirty. It will take fifteen minutes just to get my Spanx on.

“You got it.” He looks out the window. Is this when the ride will become uncomfortable?

“So, the groom is your friend from high school, right? Has he been married before?” I decide to get the scoop on the wedding to pass the time.

“Yep, known him since I was a kid. And no, actually, this is his first marriage,” Bret pauses. “Out of that group of friends, only me and one other guy are married.” I wait for his explanation to hit him. I know it does when he grabs his bottom lip, clamping it between his fingers. He shakes off the thought and continues. “There are five of us. So, two married, then there is me and the two others are still single.” He has now put himself in a separate category all together.

I start to say that I can’t imagine still being single at forty but quickly realize that I am pretty much just that. Well, almost.

“Will this group of friends all be there tonight?” I ask, curious how raucous this might get with all of these good ol’boys together again.

“No, unfortunately. Just Austin, that’s the groom, me, and Mack, who I was textin’ earlier. One guy just had a baby and our other buddy is in China for work.”

“Gotcha. So does Austin live in Atlanta?”

“No, they actually live in Charlotte, his soon-to-be wife wanted to get married in her hometown though.
